Harvey weakens to tropical storm as flooding hits Texas

Hurricane Harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm as it moves inland over Texas, the National Hurricane Center announced Saturday afternoon.

The storm now has 70 mile per hour winds, with major flooding reported in parts of Texas along the coast.

“Now that the hurricane has come on shore, our primary concern remains dramatic flooding,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said during a press conference to provide updates on the storm.

Trump’s monument plan still shrouded in secrecy

The Trump administration’s plans to potentially shrink some national monuments remain shrouded in secrecy.

President Trump had set Thursday as a deadline for Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to submit recommendations to him for what areas of land and water protected by previous presidents as monuments should have their designations changed.

Zinke was expected to reveal his proposals publicly Thursday as well. But he did not, instead releasing a two-page summary of the process behind his considerations and telling the Associated Press that he’s recommending reductions in the size of an unspecified “handful” of national monuments.

Heller walks tightrope on ObamaCare repeal

Sen. Dean Heller is trying to walk a fine line on ObamaCare ahead of his tough reelection race next year.

The Nevada Republican, considered the most vulnerable GOP senator in the 2018 midterm reelections, is under attack from both the right and the left and is trying to stake out a middle ground.

Democrats are hammering him for his vote in favor of a scaled-down repeal bill, but his Republican primary challenger, Danny Tarkanian, argues that bill did not go far enough. He said Heller should have supported a more sweeping repeal, which Heller had rejected earlier in the debate.
