Jimmy Carter: Melanoma has spread to brain

Speaking with a calm, measured tone for the better part of an hour Thursday, former
President Jimmy Carter revealed the extent of his cancer, telling reporters gathered
in Atlanta for a news conference that doctors have found “four spots of melanoma”
on his brain and that he will undergo radiation treatment starting later in the
afternoon.

“I was surprisingly at ease, more so than my wife was,” Carter said of his reaction
to the diagnosis. “But now, I feel this is in the hands of God, and I’ll be prepared
for anything that comes.”

Democrats to McConnell: Start Budget Talks Now

Senate Democrats have united to say Republican leaders should not wait until after
Labor Day to get going on budget talks.

“With the existence of a clear and urgent deadline for action, we believe it would
be unwise to wait until after the Congress returns from the August state work period
– just 23 days before the end of the federal fiscal year – to begin talks on a path
forward,” wrote the entire Democratic Conference in a letter to Majority Leader
Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. “We cannot afford to wait, only to let delay and inaction
bring us to the brink of another totally predictable and completely preventable
crisis.”

IRS says breach of taxpayer data far more widespread than it first thought: 610,000
taxpayers at risk

An attack by hackers who stole sensitive personal information from thousands of
taxpayers was far more widespread than the Internal Revenue Service first disclosed,
officials said Monday as they released new estimates that 610,000 Americans were
affected.

The revelation more than doubles the number of estimated victims of the breach.
The hackers were able to clear security screens requiring the person’s Social Security
Number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address, officials said.
