McConnell: No Lame Duck Court Confirmation

The Senate will not consider the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to a Supreme Court post during a lame-duck session, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday.

Asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” if he was “ruling it out, 100 percent,” the Kentucky Republican responded, “Yes.”

President Barack Obama nominated Garland, the chief judge of the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left when Justice Antonin Scalia died Feb. 13. Senate Republicans have vowed not to give Garland a vote or a hearing, arguing the next president should fill the spot.

Apple defends China moves amid FBI spat

Apple is battling claims that it has regularly made concessions to the Chinese government at the same time that it refuses to help the FBI unlock the San Bernardino shooter’s phone.

The U.S. government has been pushing the allegations in the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s first court hearing in the case, accusing Apple of making “special accommodations” for China that it will not provide for FBI investigators.

Obama in Cuba: ‘Change is gonna happen here’

Upon landing in Cuba, President Barack Obama had a message for its leadership: Change is coming.

“Change is gonna happen here, and I think that [Cuban President] Raúl Castro understands that,” the president said in an interview with ABC News’ David Muir.

The Cuban regime would like to control how quickly that happens, Obama noted, quickly adding that he would reinforce throughout his meetings the administration’s view that, “rather have change happen to you, it’s better to get out in front of change. And the government has the ability to recognize where the future is and to start preparing the ground.”
