In Ruling on Health Care Lawsuit, Leverage for Boehner

On Thursday, Speaker John A. Boehner reiterated House Republicans’ resolve to stop
President Barack Obama at all costs from moving forward with the Iran nuclear deal.
“This debate is far from over; in fact, it’s just beginning,” the Ohio Republican
pledged at his weekly news conference, despite Obama enjoying a veto-sustaining
majority among Democrats in both chambers. “We’ll use every tool at our disposal
to stop, slow and delay this agreement from being fully implemented.”

Freedom Caucus to Oppose Any Spending Bill With Planned Parenthood Money

On Thursday, the conservative HFC took their seventh official position: They will
oppose any spending bill that doesn’t defund Planned Parenthood.

“Given the appalling revelations surrounding Planned Parenthood, we cannot in good
moral conscience vote to send taxpayer money to this organization while still fulfilling
our duty to represent our constituents. We must therefore oppose any spending measure
that contains funding for Planned Parenthood.”

It’s a significant statement from the conservative group. It takes a four-fifths
majority for the Freedom Caucus to take an official position, meaning Republicans
would probably need Democratic votes to pass a CR if HFC members make good on their
pledge. (While the official position doesn’t state whether members would vote against
a rule for such legislation, HFC members have shown a willingness in the past to
vote against those sorts of procedural motions as well.)

Senate Will Vote on 20-Week Abortion Ban, as GOP Hopes to Defuse Shutdown Fight

The Senate will vote on legislation banning abortions after 20 weeks as a
way to pacify enraged abortion opponents who are calling for an end to federal
funding of Planned Parenthood, according to a key GOP leader.

Leadership in both the House and the Senate has steadfastly rejected calls
to remove Planned Parenthood funding from a spending bill that needs to be
passed by Sept. 30 to keep the government running, saying they will not take
legislative action that could result in a shutdown.
