Boehner, McConnell, Obama to take last stab at budget deal

Congressional Republican leaders are launching budget talks with the White House.
The talks could give outgoing Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) a last chance at a big
deal with President Obama.

They could also clear the decks of messy issues that could challenge Sen. Mitch
McConnell’s bid to hold his Senate majority in next year’s elections.

Deal-Hungry Senate Eager for Boehner’s Halloween Treats

Senators from both parties want outgoing Speaker John A. Boehner, no longer handcuffed
by hardliners in his conference, to send over as many treats as he can – with a
minimum of tricks – before retiring around Halloween.

Four days after Boehner’s announcement he’ll step down next month, Senate Minority
Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was touting Tuesday the prospects for a two-year top-line
budget deal – and Reid’s wish list for Boehner’s promised “barn cleaning” includes
an increase in the federal debt limit.

McCarthy gives Boehner a ‘B-‘ as Speaker

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) late Tuesday gave Speaker John Boehner
(R-Ohio), whom he hopes to succeed as Speaker, a “B-” grade for his tenure leading
House Republicans.

“I think John Boehner deserves a B-,” McCarthy said during an appearance on Fox
News’s “Hannity” program, prompting host Sean Hannity to lament, “Oh, come on.”
