8a Certification

The SBA’s 8(a) program gives socially and economically disadvantaged small businesses access to set-aside and sole-source federal contracts: sole-source awards can run into the millions. Applying is free, takes most businesses weeks of preparation, and you get nine years in the program, once, ever. Here’s what it actually gets you, whether you qualify, and how it fits into a real federal sales strategy.

What 8(a) Actually Gets You

Access to contracts set aside exclusively for 8(a) firms; eligibility for sole-source awards (contracts an agency can give you without full competition); and the SBA’s mentor-protégé program, which lets you team with established contractors and learn on real work. For businesses that qualify, it’s among the most powerful tools in federal contracting, which is exactly why getting the application right matters.

Do You Qualify?

The core tests: the business must be majority-owned and controlled by individuals who are socially and economically disadvantaged under SBA’s definitions, the owners must meet the SBA’s personal net-worth and income limits, and the business must qualify as small for its industry and show potential for success (generally two years of operations). The application is documentation-heavy, personal financials, business records, narratives, and applying is free. We’ll tell you honestly, at no charge, whether you’re likely to qualify before you spend weeks assembling paperwork.

Important: the rules changed in 2026. SBA reformed the program this year, applicants must now prove social and economic disadvantage with verifiable, fact-based evidence rather than relying on presumptions, and eligibility reviews have tightened considerably. Requirements like this shift under your feet; tracking them is part of what we do.

8(a) Alone Isn’t a Strategy

Here’s what the certification mills won’t say: a certification wins you nothing by itself. Plenty of 8(a) firms go their full nine years with barely a contract, because certification only opens the door, you still need a pipeline of the right opportunities, relationships with the agencies that buy what you sell, and proposals that score. That’s the work we do: strategy, agency and congressional meetings, opportunity monitoring, and proposal writing, with every price published.

Other Certifications Worth Knowing

HUBZone (businesses in historically underutilized zones), WOSB (women-owned), and SDVOSB (service-disabled veteran-owned) each unlock their own set-asides, and all are free to pursue. The right move depends on what you sell and to whom, part of the free screen we run before any engagement.
