How Much Does a State Lobbyist Cost?

Last updated: July 2, 2026

A state lobbyist typically costs $3,000 to $25,000 per month, depending on the state, and most firms require a 6-12 month contract. Big states cost more: in California, Texas, New York, or Florida, expect $10,000-$25,000 per month. Mid-size states run $5,000-$15,000, smaller states $3,000-$10,000, and session-based engagements commonly run $15,000-$50,000 per session. Almost no firm publishes its rates, you learn the price after the sales call.

Why State Lobbying Costs What It Costs

What you’re paying for: a registered lobbyist’s relationships in that capital, availability during short and intense legislative sessions, bill tracking and analysis, and compliance with that state’s lobbying laws. Rates climb with state size, session complexity, and how contested your issue is.

The Pricing Trap to Avoid

Most state lobbying contracts run twelve months even though many legislatures meet for only three to six. You pay full retainer through the months your statehouse is dark. Ask any firm you interview: “What am I getting in the interim?” Month-to-month exists, see below.
