Wall Street rattles Washington

The stock market closed a wild Monday with the Dow Jones industrial average down
over 500 points, setting off fresh fears about the health of the global economy.
The Wall Street drama quickly spread to the 2016 campaign trail and Washington,
as flashbacks to the 2008 financial crisis drew responses from the political world.

Renewed concern about the strength of China’s economy kicked off a brutal opening,
as the Dow opened down more than 1,000 points in the first minutes of trading. While
the index largely erased those gains later in the day, it still ended Monday down
588 points, adding to large losses suffered the two days prior.

North Dakota Governor’s Retirement Refocuses Attention on Heitkamp

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple announced Monday that he will not seek reelection
in 2016, renewing speculation over whether first-term Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp
will consider running for governor again, more than a decade-and-a-half after her
first try.

In response to queries about the gubernatorial race, Heitkamp spokeswoman Abbie
McDonough said, “Sen. Heitkamp is focused on her work to fight for North Dakotans
in the U.S. Senate.” Heitkamp’s office also sent out a statement praising Dalrymple’s
service.

President Obama Brings His Climate Plan to Your House

Saying this is “not the time to pull back” on renewable energy, President Obama
on Monday challenged conservative groups and Republicans who have sought to limit
his climate-change agenda.

In a speech at a Las Vegas clean-energy summit hosted by Senate Minority Leader
Harry Reid, Obama emphasized the growth of the renewable-energy industry down to
the household level and its role in meeting his administration’s climate-change
goals. And he had a message for Republicans who have fought his energy agenda:
Clean power is here to stay.
