GOP wants budget talks with Obama – not Pelosi and Reid

Republicans want President Obama as a negotiating partner when it comes to budget
talks, something Democrats are determined to avoid.

With a little more than a week to prevent a government shutdown, the GOP thinks
the talks should be between them and Obama since they now have control of the House
and Senate.

Losing the Senate in last year’s midterm elections should force Obama to deal with
them, they say.

Pope Visit Comes During Tumultuous Time for Capitol Police

Capitol Police is just one of the scores of agencies coordinating a massive security
strategy for Pope Francis’ visit to U.S. soil, but its approximately 1,700 sworn
officers and 300 civilian staff will be key to keeping the pontiff and the public
safe during the pope’s Thursday speech to a joint meeting of Congress.

Members say they are confident in security officials, but the department has been
plagued by personnel issues and infighting while planning for the papal visit.

John Boehner’s Firewall: Democrats

In the com­ing days, House Speak­er John Boehner might need the help of Demo­crats
to keep his gavel. While all eyes are on Minor­ity Lead­er Nancy Pelosi-and wheth­er
she’ll urge her caucus to aid her spar­ring part­ner across the aisle-her de­cision
might not ac­tu­ally mat­ter. It likely would take only a hand­ful of re­luct­ant
Demo­crats to help Boehner stay in power. And a few have already signaled they will.
“I’m with Boehner,” said Rep. James Cly­burn, the No. 3 Demo­crat in the lead­er­ship
ranks. “This stuff dis­rupt­ing the busi­ness of the coun­try, I’m not for. He’s
the elec­ted speak­er; I’m not go­ing to vote to va­cate the chair.”
