This week: Senate aims to kick off tax reform

Senate Republicans hope to get the ball rolling this week on tax reform, a key priority after their efforts to repeal ObamaCare collapsed earlier this year.

GOP lawmakers are expected to vote on the fiscal year 2018 budget, which paves the way for Republicans to pass tax reform by a simple majority and avoid a Democratic filibuster.

The resolution, which passed the Budget Committee along party lines earlier this month, will allow the tax plan to add up to $1.5 trillion to the deficit over a decade.

Lawmakers face fallout from Trump’s ObamaCare moves

All eyes are on Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the leaders of the Senate Health Committee who have been working to craft a bipartisan deal to stabilize the insurance markets.

Their efforts grew more urgent late Thursday night when President Trump announced he was halting key payments to insurers.

Before the Senate’s week-long recess, Alexander said he had agreed to fund the payments for two years, but there hasn’t been a bipartisan agreement on an overall package.

Amid tensions, Trump, McConnell huddle on fall agenda

President Trump is expected to meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Monday at the White House amid increased tensions.

Their lunch will follow a Cabinet meeting, according to the White House schedule.

A spokesman for McConnell said the two will talk about the fall agenda.

“The Leader will join the president and Vice President for a working lunch where they will discuss the fall agenda which includes completing the budget resolution, passing tax reform to help American families and workers, confirming well-qualified judicial and other nominees, and continuing to provide resources to communities affected by the recent hurricanes,” David Popp told Politico.
