Nancy Reagan’s Love Story Remembered Alongside Her Advocacy on Capitol Hill

Nancy Reagan’s death Sunday led Washington to reminisce about a classic love story between herself and President Ronald Reagan, as well as about the fierce advocacy for the causes she championed inside and outside the White House.

The former first lady, who died from congestive heart failure at 94 on Sunday in Los Angeles, according to her spokeswoman, was remembered by leaders on both sides of the aisle for the way she cared for the former president as the two battled through his Alzheimer’s, as well as her efforts to find a cure, even when that put her at odds with social conservatives over stem-cell research.

Week ahead: Senators look to finish opioid bill, revive Flint

The Senate is hoping to finish up its work on a heroin and prescription drug abuse bill this week.

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) appears to be on a glide path after Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) confirmed late last week that Democrats wouldn’t block the legislation.

“We’re not holding up this bill,” he said at the time. “We’re not going to oppose cloture.”.

House leadership budget panned by conservatives

House GOP leaders made their latest attempt Thursday to fashion a budget to pass conservative muster, but it was quickly dismissed by hard-right lawmakers as not nearly good enough.

“Anything that doesn’t do something today about mandatory spending is going to be very hard for conservatives to adopt,” said Idaho Rep. Raúl Labrador, a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus. “The real problem is that we have a deficit that is going up. We have a debt … and we need to address those things.”
