Senate GOP: We are unified on controversial tax policy change

Senate Republicans say that a brewing controversy in the House on state and local tax deductions won’t be much of a problem in the upper chamber.

They point out that a test vote held earlier this year shows the Senate GOP conference is unified on changing the deductibility of state and local taxes to pay for significant reductions to individual and corporate rates.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is helped by the fact that there isn’t one Senate Republican who represents the nation’s largest high-tax states — California, New York, New Jersey and Illinois.

White House ‘close’ on state, local tax decision, N.Y. rep says

Top Trump administration officials are nearing a decision on the federal deduction for state and local taxes in a tax overhaul, they told New York’s nine GOP House members late Monday.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn promised in a phone call with the lawmakers they would work on the issue throughout the day Tuesday, said Rep. Dan Donovan (R-N.Y.).

“They’re saying they’re close,” Donovan said.

Truck crash victims press Trump nominee to support truck safety rules

Truck crash victims are calling on President Trump’s nominee to lead the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to support a number of potentially life-saving trucking rules.

Truck crash survivors and victims’ family members descended on Capitol Hill on Tuesday ahead of the Senate Commerce Committee’s confirmation hearing for Raymond Martinez, who Trump tapped to serve as FMCSA Administrator.

The Truck Safety Coalition, which organized the fly-in, wants to call attention to the alarming rise in truck crash fatalities in recent years. The group is demanding that FMCSA act on nearly half a dozen safety rule-makings that the agency has either delayed or withdrawn.
